How to Prepare for Your Photography Session
Your upcoming session is an exciting opportunity to create lasting memories and capture beautiful moments. To make the most of your session and ensure a stress-free experience, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are my top tips to help you feel confident and ready for your shoot:
1. Choose Your Outfits Thoughtfully
What you wear can significantly impact how your photos turn out. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Coordinate, Don’t Match: Choose outfits with complementary colors and textures rather than matching everyone in the same outfit.
- Stick to Neutrals and Soft Tones: Neutral colors like beige, cream, blush, or muted greens photograph beautifully. Avoid loud patterns, logos, or overly bright colors that may distract from the focus of the image.
- Consider the Location and Season: Dress for the setting of your session. For example, cozy sweaters and boots work well for a fall session, while flowy dresses look stunning for beach or summer photoshoots.
- Be Comfortable: Make sure everyone’s outfits allow for movement and reflect their personality. Comfort translates to confidence in photos!

2. Prepare the Little Ones (and Pets)
If your session includes children or pets, a little extra preparation can help ensure everything goes smoothly:
- Plan Snacks and Breaks: Bring non-messy snacks and water to keep kids happy and energized.
- Practice Posing or Playing: Get kids excited by letting them know this will be a fun activity. Play a quick game of “say cheese” or “show me your best silly face” beforehand to ease nerves.
- Bring Pet Essentials: If pets are joining, pack leashes, treats, and waste bags. A favorite toy can help grab their attention during the shoot. Bonus: If you’re able, bring another person to help with your pets so you can enjoy some photos without worrying.

3. Time It Right
The timing of your session can make a big difference in the lighting and overall vibe:
- Golden Hour Magic: The hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset is ideal for soft, flattering light.
- Nap and Meal Schedules: If you have young children, schedule the session around their happiest times of the day to avoid cranky moods.
- Early Mornings: The softness of the morning sun is so beautiful especially in the summer months. If you’re planning a session with little kids or you prefer to start your day with photos, this may be a great option.

4. Bring Props and Accessories
Props can add a personal touch to your photos. Consider bringing:
- A cozy blanket for snuggling
- A bouquet of flowers or a favorite book
- Sentimental items, like heirlooms or baby shoes
- Fun seasonal props, such as pumpkins, holiday lights, or beach toys

5. Trust Your Photographer
Remember, it’s my job to guide you through the session and make you feel at ease. I’ll help with posing, find the best lighting, and ensure we capture both candid and posed moments. All you need to do is relax and enjoy the experience!

6. Relax and Be Yourself
The best photos happen when you feel comfortable and natural. Don’t worry about being perfect—focus on being present and enjoying the moment with your loved ones. Laughter, connection, and genuine emotions will shine through in every image.
