What I’m Bringing and Why
Packing for a photography heavy trip like Japan always requires intention. This trip is a mix of photography, short form content, YouTube videos, and learning, so every item I bring has a purpose.
My main camera body is my Sony A7IV. It’s reliable, versatile, and my go to for both photography and video.
This year I’m bringing two lenses I’m especially excited about. The 35mm 1.4 GM and the 70–200mm GM OSS II. I chose these intentionally because I want to start creating more work for my print shop and a future passion project. The 35mm is perfect for storytelling and everyday scenes, while the 70–200 will come out on days with especially strong visual opportunities.
I’m also bringing the Fujifilm X100VI. Brody and I will be taking two photography courses during this trip, and it’s the perfect camera when I don’t want to carry my full setup. It’s lightweight, discreet, and fun to shoot with. Otherwise, Brody often uses it.
For video and behind the scenes content, I’m packing my Meta glasses for quick BTS moments, a phone mount that attaches to my camera hot shoe, and the DJI Pocket 3 with microphones for YouTube videos. I’m still deciding whether to bring my laptop since it’s a shorter trip, so that’s currently a maybe.
Everything fits into my Peak Design 30L travel backpack with a medium packing cube. It keeps my gear organized and makes going through security simple.
For everyday wear, I’m switching things up this year and bringing a medium crescent Baggu bag instead of a mini backpack. It feels lighter and more flexible for long days of walking. I’m also hoping to find a green one at GU while we’re in Tokyo.
I try to be very mindful about what I carry each day. I won’t bring the 70–200 everywhere, only on days where I know it’ll be worth it. Being intentional with gear helps me stay present, creative, and not overwhelmed while traveling.
